Jasper scratched his head as he stares at the big breadfruit in the tree. Rowayne watched jaspers eyes then sped off quickly. Jasper shouted; boy don’t pick that breadfruit because I saw it first. By that time Rowayne was half way up the tree. He smiled at Jasper and said, Mass Jasper this is lunch for me and my friends. Jasper grabbed his machete and threaten Rowayne to get off his breadfruit tree.
Breadfruit is a loved food for many living in the Caribbean. Nothing can replace its rich, soft, wholesome taste. A little piece of breadfruit will activate your taste buds for wanting more; while your teeth enjoy punching the waxy, soft flesh. When roasted and peeled, it smells like baked bread. But its authentic taste is much better than ten baked breads.
Half-ripe breadfruit can be boiled or roasted. It is sweeter and waxier than green breadfruit. Its sweetness is similar to honey. When the breadfruit is fully ripe and roasted the sweetness is spread evenly throughout its flesh. Its yellow color is highlighted and its skin becomes very thin. Many Jamaicans love roasted breadfruit especially when it is half-ripe. It can be roasted or boiled and be eaten with melted butter or stew chicken.
Jamaicans prefer to roast their breadfruit on woodfire in open air. This is because of the high aroma that comes from roasting breadfruit. If you roast it in your kitchen, the aroma will live in your house for many days. Anyone who visited your house can tell that you have roasted breadfruit in your kitchen. Be careful not to eat it around friends because once you open your plate everyone will beg some of that roasted breadfruit especially if you having it with Jamaican saltfish and ackee.
Younger Jamaicans love to have their roasted breadfruit fried with plenty salt. However, you cannot ask them to roast or peel it but they will gladly enjoy it. Others love to make breadfruit punch or breadfruit sauce. Some says you will become coward if you eat too much breadfruit. Whatever the tale, the love of breadfruit is in the air.
Roasted breadfruit is also loved by visitors. They too gravitate to its natural taste. They often take many packs of roasted breadfruit back to their mother land and it is never enough. Too much mouth to feed with roasted breadfruit a foreign. Surprise your family and friends abroad, take a pack of roasted breadfruit with you this summer. They will love you for it.
